domain nameOne of the unfortunate truths about the internet today is that the overwhelming majority of high-quality domain names are already registered.  This means that they belong to the registrant for a set period of time, and that this person will be allowed to renew their registration of the name continually.  For some domains, such as those that belong to multi-national businesses, this means that they will never become available for new registration - the current owners will continue to pay the registration fees and renew their ownership forever.

If you are interested in a domain name but you have found that it is already registered, you are left with two basic choices.  First of all, you could try to find a different domain name that isn't registered - perhaps a different combination of the name you wanted, or one that has hyphens or more details.  Whilst 'Example12345.co.uk' might be registered, 'Example-12345.co.uk' may not be - this is an easy way to get something close to the name you want.  The second option you have in the case of finding your name is already registered is to try to negotiate a purchase with the owner.  Of course this will have no effect if you are trying to get a well-known or trade-marked name from a big company or organization, but if the domain name is not being used (ie. there is no site attached to the name) or it has not been updated for a long period of time it is certainly worth trying to get in contact with the owner.  Make a reasonable offer for the name or at least indicate that you are interested in acquiring it, and you may find you have yourself a deal.
