If you are looking into setting up your own website - perhaps for yourself or your business - then one of the first things you will want to do is to obtain a domain name that suits your needs and which will be easy to remember for your visitors. There are many internet-based companies which offer registration services. In general it is a simple matter of typing in the domain name which you are hoping to register and the registration company's site will search through a number of databases to determine whether or not the name is already in use. This is called a 'whois' search and will bring up results which will show you who owns the domain name you are after (if it is indeed already registered).
If it is the case that the domain name you are interested in is not already registered then you will be able to pay a set fee to have the name designated to your ownership. It's important to note that different extensions ('.co.uk', '.com', and so forth) have different registration costs and will have different periods of registration. Presently '.co.uk' extensions can be registered for two years (no more and no less), whilst '.com' extensions can be registered for up to ten years. In all instances you will be sent a reminder by your registration company when the time of your domain name's expiration is drawing near - this will allow you to renew your registration for another few years and will prevent others from taking your registration from you.
